The Leadership of Secretary Xavier Becerra: A Look at the Latest Developments in the US Department of Health and Human Services
As the 25th Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Xavier Becerra, man, he’s been all over the news! His efforts to tackle, like, major health issues in this country are kinda impressive, even if I don’t always agree with everything. In this here article, we’ll take a closer look at what’s been happening at the HHS under his watch. It’s been a wild ride, lemme tell ya.
A Background in Public Service
Before he became the big cheese at HHS, Becerra was a Congressman from California – since way back in ’93! Wow, that’s a long time. And before that? He was California’s Attorney General from 2011 to 2017. So yeah, he’s seen a thing or two. Seems pretty well-prepared for the job, though I’m sure it’s still crazy busy.
COVID-19 Response: Prioritizing Vaccine Distribution and Relief Funding
One HUGE challenge for the HHS, and Becerra, was, you know, the whole COVID-19 thing. In January 2021, he announced – with a lot of fanfare, I remember – that the Biden administration was gonna prioritize getting vaccines to the people who needed them most: healthcare workers, old folks, and people with pre-existing conditions. Good call, I think. Really smart move.
In March 2021, Becerra announced – I think it was like, a gazillion dollars – $1.9 trillion in COVID-19 relief funding. Part of that American Rescue Plan Act thing. That’s a LOT of money. Hopefully, it helped. I mean, it should have.
Healthcare Reform: Strengthening the Affordable Care Act
Becerra’s also been trying to make the Affordable Care Act (ACA) – you know, Obamacare – stronger. In January 2021, he said the HHS would expand Medicaid coverage and make mental health services more accessible. Sounds good on paper, but, you know, actually doing it is a whole different ballgame.
There’s been talk about “Medicare for All,” but Becerra’s said that’s not a top priority right now. They’re focusing on improving the current Medicare system instead. Makes sense, I guess. Baby steps.
Mental Health and Substance Abuse: A Growing Concern
Mental health and substance abuse are huge problems, and Becerra’s been working on them. In April 2021, he announced – another big number – $1.1 billion for mental health services and substance abuse treatment. Hopefully, that money actually gets to where it needs to go. It’s a start, anyway. The opioid crisis is a nightmare, and he’s trying to tackle that too.
Climate Change: A Growing Health Concern
In February 2021, Becerra said the HHS would focus on the health effects of climate change – heatstroke, breathing problems, that kinda stuff. It’s a big deal, and it’s good to see someone acknowledging it.
